Gurwant Singh Wins 2024 SJJIF No-Gi World Championship

10th Planet Oakland’s Gurwant Singh captured a major international title at the 2024 SJJIF World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship, winning gold in the Brown Belt Master 5 Heavyweight division.

Gurwant didn’t stop with the heavyweight title.

He also entered the Open Weight division, earning silver and finishing the World Championships with both a gold and silver medal. Official SJJIF results confirm Gurwant as the Brown Belt Master 5 Heavyweight World Champion and Open Weight runner-up.

The World Championship result represented years of training, competition and continued technical development.

An important part of Gurwant’s preparation has been his work with 10th Planet Oakland Coach Huerta. Gurwant regularly puts in additional one-on-one training through private lessons with Huerta, using that time to sharpen details and continue developing his Jiu Jitsu beyond regular classes.

That additional work paid off on the world stage.

Winning a world championship requires more than showing up on tournament day. It’s the result of countless hours spent developing technique, identifying weaknesses, making adjustments and continuing to improve.

Gurwant’s performance also represents something important about the training environment at 10th Planet Oakland.

Athlete development isn’t built around a single coach. The academy’s coaching staff brings different experience, perspectives and areas of technical knowledge to the room, giving students opportunities to work closely with coaches who can help them continue progressing.

Under founder and head coach Michael Hillebrand, that collaborative approach has become an important part of the academy’s culture: coaches continue learning, athletes seek out additional knowledge, and everyone works together toward better Jiu Jitsu.

For Gurwant, that combination of consistent training and the additional one-on-one work with Coach Huerta helped produce the biggest result of his brown belt career.

He left the 2024 SJJIF World No-Gi Championship as a Brown Belt Heavyweight World Champion and Open Weight silver medalist.
