10th Planet Oakland Coaches and Athletes Train with Eddie Bravo at 10th Planet HQ
The learning never stops at 10th Planet Oakland.
Members of the 10th Planet Oakland coaching and competition team regularly travel to 10th Planet HQ to train with 10th Planet founder Eddie Bravo, exchange ideas and continue developing alongside the broader 10th Planet team.
On this trip, Michael Hillebrand was joined by several members of the Oakland team, including kids program head coaches Stephen Choi and Corbin Bilund, Coach Alan Chang, competitors Justin Turner and Jonny Mezheritskiy, and black belt Dylan Peters.
These trips are an important part of the coaching philosophy at 10th Planet Oakland.
Rather than treating coaching knowledge as something that becomes complete once someone earns a black belt, our coaches continue to be students themselves. Training directly with Bravo and other members of the larger 10th Planet team gives the Oakland coaching staff opportunities to study new ideas, exchange information and bring those lessons back to our students.
That extends to our youth program as well.
Having both Coach Choi and Coach Bilund, who lead the kids program at 10th Planet Oakland, training at HQ means the people responsible for developing our youngest athletes are continuing their own education and staying connected to the evolution of the system.
Young competitors also get opportunities to experience that environment firsthand. Jonny Mezheritskiy, one of 10th Planet Oakland’s standout young competitors, joined the team for the trip and had the opportunity to train alongside experienced black belts, coaches and competitors from the larger 10th Planet community.
For 10th Planet Oakland, staying at the forefront of Jiu Jitsu means more than looking for the newest technique. It means maintaining a culture where coaches continue learning, competitors continue testing themselves and information continues flowing between Oakland, 10th Planet HQ and the greater team.
The goal is simple: keep learning, bring that knowledge home and continue finding better ways to develop our students.
