PJ Barch Shares the Constraints-Led Approach at 10th Planet Oakland

10th Planet Oakland welcomed PJ Barch to the academy to share his perspective on the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) and how its principles can be applied to Jiu Jitsu training.
CLA is an approach to skill development that uses carefully designed games, goals and constraints to create realistic problems for athletes to solve. Rather than prescribing every movement, coaches can shape the training environment so students learn to recognize opportunities, make decisions and develop solutions against live resistance.
Barch has been a major influence on how we have explored these ideas at 10th Planet Oakland.
Our coaching philosophy has never been about committing to one method simply because it is popular. We have long believed there is value in both technical drilling and constraints-based training, and our goal is to understand where each approach can produce the best results for our students.
Working with Barch gave 10th Planet Oakland founder and head coach Michael Hillebrand and the coaching team an opportunity to dive deeper into CLA, experiment with its concepts and determine how more of those ideas could be integrated into the academy’s existing training methods.
That process reflects a larger philosophy at 10th Planet Oakland: coaching should continue to evolve.
Jiu Jitsu is constantly changing, and we believe the way it is taught should be examined and improved as well. That means learning from accomplished competitors and coaches, testing different approaches on the mat, keeping what produces results and continuing to refine how we help students develop.
For us, CLA isn’t about abandoning drilling or declaring that there is only one correct way to learn Jiu Jitsu. It is another powerful tool that can be combined with technical instruction, drilling, positional training and live resistance to create more adaptable grapplers.
Having PJ on the mats sharing his philosophy gave our coaches and students another opportunity to challenge how we think about learning and continue searching for better ways to develop Jiu Jitsu.
The techniques keep evolving. The way we teach them should evolve too.
